The demolition
of the old neighborhood lying between Via del Teatro
Argentina, Via Florida, Via S. Nicola
de' Cesarini and Corso Vittorio Emanuele,
which took place in a short space of time between 1926
and 1929, unexpectedly revealed one of the city's
most important archaeological complexes: a vast
paved square containing four temples, generally
identified as the Porticus Minucia Vetus, founded
by Marcus Minucius Rufus after his victory over
the Scordisci in 107 BC.
This
is one of the rare examples to have survived of Republican
temple architecture.
Unfortunately,
its low lying position with respect to the surrounding
roads, which are affected by heavy traffic, makes the
area somewhat inaccessible, and it has become a kind
of traffic island, with all the negative consequences
of air pollution on the ancient structures, which
are in a worrying state of deterioration as a result.
Indeed,
the area is currently undergoing restoration.
